“People are more and more moved by envy now, by the desire to satisfy their material greed, and by vanity. Giving dinners, riding in private carriages, occupying high social positions, and having myriads of servants—- these are considered so important by some that they devote their whole lives to acquiring them and sacrifice for their sake their love of their fellow men, and sometimes even kill themselves if they cannot obtain what they believe they must have. It is the same with those who are not rich. And, as to the poor, who cannot satisfy their needs at all, they just drown their envy of others in alcohol. But the way they are being aroused now, it will soon be blood rather than liquor on which they will get drunk. Now let me ask you: Do you really think that such men are free?”

lj?
does anyone here use livejournal? I don’t think I’ve asked this on tumblr before, which is rather surprising; I’ve had one since about the age of eleven.. multiple accounts have blossomed, yeah, but I use it on a daily basis and love it dearly.
If you would like to be friends, comment here with your username/journal (or, alternatively, you can add me.)
“He covered page after page with wild words of sorrow and wilder words of pain. There is a luxury in self-reproach. When we blame ourselves, we feel that no one else has a right to blame us. It is the confession, not the priest, that gives us absolution.”
—Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray
Do you know what would be really awesome?
If Tumblr had a chat function.
“Once, art, morality and truth were contained within religion. Beauty and intelligence, synonymous. We ate at the Pink Taco and then went to the bookstore to buy Female Chauvinist Pigs—get it? And I might have been wearing a thong. In the book group everyone introduced themselves by their names and how they identify; I said I identify as a writer and Audrey said “in bed.” I read the sunset is still a principal metaphor for transcendence, light glinting off crystalline particulates of airborne salt and sand. Sure, you looked hot on a motorcycle at sunset. Beloveds, a heart can physically ache when it’s metaphorically broken. Science loves accidents. I remember learning that airplane wings don’t freeze because of dry ice—a discovery made by accident. “Quickly … cool these wings!” Now we’ve learned that oristates are either blue or red, but some already knew this about geography: once the Berlin Wall fell, Coca-Cola infiltrated the blue territory that Pepsi had dominated for years. Some thanked God for giving Coke this chance. But back to the heart.”
